Unmasked Strength
In Mexico, Lucha Libre is a wrestling tradition historically dominated by men. Whilst women do take to the arenas, they remain outside the traditional narrative. Through these images, Blumenkron represents women who are tough and seek to live outside the ring, leading lives where they can be their true self and take the masks off.
Set against the hypermasculine backdrop of Lucha Libre, this series challenges traditional gender roles by centring women who reclaim the arena not to fight, but to exist boldly on their own terms. Through surreal costumes and confident stances, the work embodies the tension between performance and authenticity, strength and softness, public persona and private identity.
Through documentary photography combined with theatrical costuming and staging, Blumenkron captures the power of women stepping outside expectation and living unmasked. The series speaks to resilience, self-determination, and the radical act of existing authentically within systems designed to constrain women’s possibilities.
